Marbling paper is great fun and can become quite addictive. Colours are floated on a bath of thickened water and the design is lifted from the surface on a sheet of paper.
Participants will learn the basics of this ancient technique for decorating paper. During the workshop you will learn several designs, many of which will be familiar from the endpapers of fine old books. We will progress from the simplest designs produced by sprinkling colours onto the surface of a marbling bath and proceed to more complex patterns, which involve manipulation of the floating colour. Everyone should have 10 or more A4 sheets of their own marbled paper to take home. At the end of the session, if time allows, we will attempt the oldest marbling technique of all, Japanese suminagashi.
Marbling is messy and the pigments may stain, so please wear old clothes – a plastic apron will be provided. All equipment and materials supplied.
**Limited places available** Maximum group size 6 minimum age 12.
Papers may still be wet at the end of the day, so may need to be collected at a later date or be posted on to participants (by arrangement).
